Persian Soumak (4-9 x 6-6) (642)
About This Rug
This Soumak-weave rug, handwoven in Iran using handspun, natural dye yarns, is a beautiful example of tribal art from southwestern Iran. Soumaks are a pile-less rug, or flatweave, but they're much sturdier than the kilims that one usually associates with flatweaves. These rugs are rare and hard to come by. There is an embargo on rugs coming from Iran, and the number of tribal weavers is diminishing rapidly with modernization.
