Suzani Rugs

The word "suzani" comes from the Persian (Iranian) word for "needle." Suzanis were originally made in Uzbekestan, resembling embroidery much more than rugs designed for the floor. Our Suzani design rugs are hand made in soumak weave, which is
a weft-wrapping technique that gives great clarity to their varied and interesting designs.

One wonderful of advantage of our soumak Suzani rugs is that they are completely reversible (in the older soumaks the yarns were left hanging on the back side of the rug rather than being woven back into the rug). Each side is a little different, the design being a bit more distinct on one side than the other. The "stiches" really resemble the knit and purl surfaces of knitting. Our Suzanis are a "flat weave," pileless rug that is thicker than the kilim and much sturdier because of the tightness of the weave, density, and the amount of wool used in the rug. They suit situations where a thinner rug is needed, and also provide extraordinary durability and ease of care.
Vibrant colors combined with subtle abrash (variation in depth of color) create a look and feel that pleases the contemporary eye while honoring tradition. We offer this unique collection of Suzani rugs to you for the first time with great excitement!
